Asian Jazz

The Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet returns to Macau once again, after a fantastic showcase at the Macau International Music Festival Jazz x Jazz concert. The Quartet has performed all over the world since 2010, and most recently at the EFG London Jazz Festival. The opening performance by the Quartet at the Fifth Macau Jazz Week promises to be a blast! The Quartet is led by Jeremy Monteiro, a Singaporean pianist/organist, who is also known at home as “The King of Swing”. Monteiro began his music career at age 16 in the seventies, and this year marks his 40th Anniversary as a professional musician. He was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 2002, a pinnacle arts award. In addition to releasing close to 40 albums, Monteiro has worked with the best in the business like the legendary James Moody, Toots Thielemans, Michael Brecker, Lee Ritenour, Herbie Mann, Ernie Watts and Charlie Haden. Tots Tolentino is one of the most influential saxophonists in Philippines, whose playing is full of soul and beautiful phrases. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Boston, he returned home to pursue a career as a soloist and session musician. He has worked with legends like Terumasa Hino and McCoy Tyner. Tolentino also heads the jazz program at University of Santo Tomas, Manila, promoting jazz to the younger generation. Hailing from Thailand, which has a vibrant jazz scene thanks to the late King’s love of the music, Hong Chanutr Techatana-nan is one of Asia’s most exciting drummers today. Besides being a musician, Hong also teaches at the Silpakorn University Jazz Faculty. Hong Kong premier jazz guitarist, Eugene Pao also makes his return to Macau after performing recently at the Macau International Music Festival. He is a long-time collaborator of Jeremy Monteiro, who since the mid-1980s has looked up to Pao as the benchmark for jazz performance excellence in the region. So do come and catch The Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet at the Macau Jazz Week!
